Instructions to authors

Scope

The journal has a scientific character and its target audience consists of the academic community and research institutions, especially in the Interdisciplinary, Environmental, and Water Resources areas.

General Rules

  • Articles must be original and submitted exclusively to Revista Ambiente & Água.
  • Only texts in English are accepted.
  • Submissions must be made through the ScholarOne
  • Evaluation criteria:
    • International relevance or social impact;
    • Technical and scientific consistency;
    • Scientific importance;
    • Clarity and quality of the text;
    • Theoretical adequacy.

Types of documents accepted

The following are the types of documents that can be submitted to the journal:

  • Original Article exclusively in English, but with title, abstract, and keywords in Portuguese.
  • Review Article, provided that it presents a critical analysis of the selected topic and is based on current literature from high-impact scientific journals.
  • Preprints that follow the FAIR principles (FAIRsharing.org) and have preferably been deposited in the following repositories: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and madRxiv.

Authors' Contribution

Ambi-Água suggests a maximum of six authors. If the number of authors is greater, we request that a justification be submitted and attached to the submission system for review by the Editorial Committee.

We adopt the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) to accurately identify the contributions of each author in our publications. This helps us to transparently attribute due credit to each author. For more information about CRediT, please visit this site.

During the submission process on the ScholarOne system, authors declare any conflicts of interest and, additionally, indicate each author's contribution to the research.

Manuscript Preparation

The article should be submitted in text format (MS Office), without password restrictions to allow editing. The final publication will be in PDF, HTML, ePDF, and XML formats. The article must be submitted with the following characteristics:

  • Language: High-quality English (US or UK)
  • Page size: equivalent to A4 paper size (210 x 297 mm);
  • Margins (top, bottom, left, and right): 2.5 cm;
  • Font and alignment: Times New Roman, 12, single line spacing, single column, with paragraphs aligned left and right;
  • Size: articles will be analyzed based on quality and scientific contribution. They should have a minimum of 9 pages, including tables and figures, which should preferably not exceed five (figures plus tables).
  • First page: Should contain only the title of the work, abstract, and between three and five keywords, in lowercase letters, separated by commas and a period after the last keyword. It should not contain the authors' names, affiliation, or email.

Manuscript structure

All written manuscripts must be submitted in English. Authors whose first language is not English should have their manuscripts reviewed by a professional with a good command of English for text revision (vocabulary, grammar, and syntax). Submissions may be rejected based on textual inadequacy, without examination of scientific merit. The English article should follow the following sequence:

TITLE in English;

ABSTRACT (followed by three Keywords in alphabetical order and separated by commas);

TITLE of the article in Portuguese;

RESUMO (followed by three Keywords in alphabetical order and separated by commas);

  1. INTRODUCTION (including literature review);
  2. MATERIAL AND METHODS;
  3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION;
  4. CONCLUSIONS;
  5. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS (if applicable, include only the acknowledgment of funding agencies, explicitly stating the funding agency's grant number); and
  6. REFERENCES.

Check previously published articles to see which texts should be in bold.

Units of measurement: use the international system with a space after the number, e.g., 10 m or, for example, 10 km h⁻¹, and not km/h. Observe consistency every time you use the same unit.

Write the numbers one through nine in words, except when used as units.

Use a space between units: g L⁻¹, and not g.L⁻¹, or gL⁻¹ except for % (e.g., 10%) or °C (15 °C).

Use the 24-hour format for time, with four digits for hours and minutes: 08:00; 15:30.

Títles (ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, MATERIAL AND METHODS, etc.): Use uppercase letters, size 14, bold, left-aligned.

Subtitles: When necessary, they will be written with initial capital letters, preceded by two Arabic numerals placed to the left, separated and followed by a period, 12, bold, left-aligned.

Abstract: It should contain the objectives, methodology, results, and conclusions, and should consist of a continuous sequence of sentences in a single paragraph, containing a maximum of 250 words.

Citations: In the text, citations should follow the recommendations of ABNT-NBR 10520 with the following specificities. Write the last name of the cited author with only the first letter capitalized, followed by the year in parentheses, when the author is part of the text. When the author is not part of the text, write the last name in parentheses, followed by the year separated by a comma. For more than one author, separate the last names with the conjunction "and".

Examples of how to cite: Jones (2015), Jones and Smith (2009) or (Jones, 2015; Jones and Smith, 2009), depending on the sentence structure. More than two authors: Jones et al. (2014) or (Jones et al., 2014). Personal communications or unpublished data should not be included in the reference list; likewise, Apud (indirect citation) will not be accepted.

Try to limit the number of references to 15 derived from articles recently published in the SciELO database (www.scielo.br and www.scielo.org) or in high-impact international journals.

Equations: Charts and figures created in MS Excel should be inserted as editable objects. The same applies to equations (use an equation editor, preferably MS Word 2010 or later, or use MathType), which should be inserted as objects, not as images, and numbered within parentheses.

Authors should express equations in the simplest way possible. They should include only the equations necessary for the reader to understand the technical basis of the manuscript. Manuscripts should not contain excessive mathematical notation.

Important: The uploaded file must not contain any author identification; therefore, remove any identifying information from the file properties, such as names, affiliations, or email addresses. Acknowledgments are desirable but will be edited to avoid author identification until the article has been accepted for publication.

All content of the article is the sole responsibility of the authors.

Each volume published by the Ambiente & Água Journal features a representative image from an article published in that issue, which will serve as the cover image. Images must be original, high-resolution (300 dpi), and approximately 17 by 17 cm. For the selected images, the authors grant Ambiente & Água Journal a license for their publication. Authors retain copyright to the submitted images and are solely responsible for obtaining permission for their use.

In any case, the authors grant Ambi-Agua a license to use any image from the published manuscript as the volume cover image, unless expressly stated otherwise.

Digital Assets

Tables and Figures: These should be numbered with consecutive Arabic numerals, as indicated in the text, and attached to the nearest section of the article after the citation. Figure titles should appear at the bottom, preceded by the word Figure (note the first letter is capitalized and bold), a space, then the figure number in bold, a period, and a space of one character, font size 11, justified, indented within the figure limits. Note that the figure title immediately below the figure is not in bold.

Table titles should appear at the top, preceded by the word Table (note the first letter is capitalized and bold), a space, then the figure number (in bold), a period, and a space of one character, font size 11, justified.

In figures and tables, when a source is cited, the word "Source:" appears at the bottom, followed by the reference, font size 10, justified. Table titles, figure titles, and sources should always end with a period.

Figures may be in color, but with good resolution (300 dpi). However, authors should explore all possibilities to keep the file size within the specified range while preserving figure quality.

Tables should always be inserted as text, never as figures/images, and should not use spaces or tabs for formatting; instead, use cell/column/row sizes. All columns must have a title. Send an additional copy of the tables in Excel.

Figures should have legible fonts, pay attention to text size, be high resolution, and be inserted as objects when dealing with graphs. Figures should not have a title at the top, only a caption below. Ensure they are editable.
